As for weather reading features, they will be the same. You won’t get a ‘better’ temperature reading, wind reading, etc, or even more readings than available on the 4400/4600… still the same quality USA made meter backed by a 5 year warranty. That being said there are some pretty outstanding updates.
The Kestrel 5400 is revolutionary in size, cost and capability for those in need of measuring Heat Stress. Available with or without LiNK (Bluetooth) and / or a compass.
Along with having a Wet Bulb Global Temperature reading, the Kestrel 5400 displays thermal work limit (“TWL”), another recognized composite heat stress prediction tool. For both WBGT and TWL, the Kestrel 5400 provides on-screen alarms when conditions enter the caution and danger zones, providing clear and immediate guidance that heat illness prevention steps must be taken. Clothing levels can also be customized, making the Kestrel 4400 particularly useful in activities requiring heavy protective gear which worsens heat stress. The Kestrel 5400 also displays natural wet bulb temperature, and black globe temperature.

Advantage over the Kestrel 3000 & Kestrel 3500FW models: You won’t need to calibrate this meter! Kestrel AU will stand by this and other 5000 series models to hold calibration within drift for 5 years. Kestrel AU will repair, recalibrate or replace any defective product within the warranty period. “Defective” includes measurements outside of our accuracy spec plus stated drift.

This Kestrel meter does it all. The Kestrel 5500 provides the same trusted accuracy, reliability, and usability as the original Kestrel 4500. Measure every environmental condition plus wind direction, crosswind and headwind/tailwind. Use it golfing, sailing, flying, spraying, shooting and more. Drop-proof, dust-proof, waterproof and able to withstand extreme environments without damage, your Kestrel weather meter travels with you anywhere you dare to go. A range of carry pouch options makes it even easier to take your Kestrel meter with you.
In addition to measuring the current environmental conditions, the Kestrel 5500 tracks and logs over 10,000 sets of time-stamped data. Your data log can be transferred to a mobile device wirelessly with the LiNK wireless communication option and Kestrel LiNK app, or to a PC/MAC with either the accessory Kestrel LiNK Dongle or waterproof USB Data Transfer Cable (available separately).
The true versatility of the Kestrel 5500 becomes apparent with the addition of the Kestrel Vane Mount. This precision-engineered accessory securely mounts the Kestrel 5500 to any tripod or other ¼-20 fitted bracket. Once mounted, the Kestrel 5500 becomes a full-featured weather station – with a large wind vane and precision pivot keeping the Kestrel oriented into the wind for continuous measurement and logging of wind speed, wind direction, and all other key weather parameters.
The Kestrel LiNK app also displays the Kestrel’s real-time readings on a vivid, customizable dashboard – providing a remote display that functions up to 200’ away (line of sight). The ENTIRE Kestrel 5500 + Vane Mount kit weighs just 10.5 ounces / 295 grams, and packs into the included padded belt carry pouch that is just 2.5 x 3 x 8.5 inches / 6.5 x 7.5 x 22 cm. Providing hundreds of hours of accurate measurements, the Kestrel 5500 is truly the world’s most compact weather station. The Rotating Vane Mount is included with the 5500 with LiNK, or available for purchase separately. It works with any Kestrel 5 Series meter.

SARS-COV-2 virus is forcing teaching modalities to change. The sciences will be directly affected as much of the curriculum relies upon hands on learning.
I spent a few hours over the weekend exploring ways to inexpensively add video streaming capabilities to your existing microscope cameras. I aimed to restrict the components required to what can be commonly found in classrooms, or have utility outside of this project.
You’ll need a camera, a microscope, a specimen, and a Raspberry Pi 3 or 4. It’s likely that any old PC that can run Linux, has a USB port, and a network connection will do, but I’ve tested this on a Raspberry Pi 3 and 4.
The eyepiece cameras that we have sold in recent times, (TP-105 and TP-103), worked straight away. Any cameras made by Touptek in recent times should work with minimal fuss. The Tucsen GT series will also work (tested with a GT12).
For the server, I originally tested with a Raspberry Pi 3, which we use here as a tracking cookie blocker using Pi Hole. I have also successfully tested this with a Raspberry Pi 4. You’ll need local terminal or SSH access to the Raspberry Pi.
Raspbian comes with Video For Linux pre-installed. You can see if your camera will work by typing:
$ v4l2-ctl --list-formats-ext
If all goes to plan, you’ll get an output like: (this is for a GT12)
ioctl: VIDIOC_ENUM_FMT
Index : 0
Type : Video Capture
Pixel Format: 'YUYV'
Name : YUYV 4:2:2
Size: Discrete 640x480
Interval: Discrete 0.067s (15.000 fps)
Size: Discrete 320x240
Interval: Discrete 0.067s (15.000 fps)
Index : 1
Type : Video Capture
Pixel Format: 'MJPG' (compressed)
Name : Motion-JPEG
Size: Discrete 800x600
Interval: Discrete 0.033s (30.000 fps)
Size: Discrete 1024x768
Interval: Discrete 0.033s (30.000 fps)
Size: Discrete 1600x1200
Interval: Discrete 0.033s (30.000 fps)
Size: Discrete 1920x1080
Interval: Discrete 0.033s (30.000 fps)
Size: Discrete 2304x1728
Interval: Discrete 0.033s (30.000 fps)
Size: Discrete 2592x1944
Interval: Discrete 0.200s (5.000 fps)
Size: Discrete 4000x3000
Interval: Discrete 0.033s (30.000 fps)
If you only get the line with “YUYV”, then your camera will likely work but with raw or uncompressed video.
The camera that returns “MJPG” is a little better as this is compressed video and should mean that the CPU has less work to do when we get to the streaming part.
Another useful app that comes pre-installed is fswebcam. This will let you take a snapshot from the connected camera.
$ fswebcam image.jpg
By default, this grabs a frame, puts a banner on the bottom of the image and saves it as a file.

Note that you might not have the image in focus, so set it all up with the standard software first. Also, this is the raw image: no auto exposure or white balance is applied.
Now we’re getting to the interesting part: setting up the streaming server. I tried Motion and MPJG-Streamer. I prefer MJPG-Streamer. To install this, run the following:
$ sudo apt-get install libjpeg-dev $ sudo apt-get install cmake $ git clone https://github.com/jacksonliam/mjpg-streamer $ cd mjpg-streamer-experimental $ make $ sudo make install
This should download, compile, and install MJPG-Streamer.
The command to run the streaming server is
$ mjpg_streamer -i "input_uvc.so -d /dev/video0 -r 640x360 -f 10" -o "output_http.so -p 9090 -w ./www"
This creates a web server that is accessible on port 9090 of your Raspberry Pi. Note that you need to run this command in the mjpg-streamer-experimental directory.

Test the video stream by clicking on the “Stream” link, or set the device’s parameters using the “Control” link.

640 x 480 seems to be the best resolution for YUV video streams. MJPG might happily produce higher resolution video. But keep in mind that this needs to now be viewed by multiple clients. Use the smallest resolution you can to maintain image quality, high frame rate, and to minimise the load on the Raspberry Pi and the network.
-d sets the device if you have multiple cameras
-r sets the capture resolution
-f sets the capture frame rate (isn’t useful to exceed the camera’s native frame rate at this resolution).
With a Raspberry Pi 3, this set up should handle around 5 – 10 clients. The Raspberry Pi 4 will handle more. I haven’t tested this well yet, so your comments below will be helpful.
Point student’s browsers to:
{raspberrypi}:9090/stream_simple.html
or
{raspberrypi}:9090/stream.html
File -> Open Network -> http://{raspberrypi}:9090/?action=stream

Presentation cameras are suited for projecting a microscope image onto a monitor, TV, or projector via HDMI. Ideal for teaching and presenting.
Eyes up cameras have a low latency and update fast so that the operator can manipulate the specimen while it is being displayed. Ideal for operators that spend an extended amount of time using their microscopes and that want to maintain a natural ergonomic position.

Presentation cameras can also be used to project a compressed video stream to tablets or computers connected to a network. Observers can save and annotate the images independently of the presenter.

15FPS is the minimum frame rate before movement becomes very noticeable, and is suitable for mostly static observation, like in electronics or gemmology.
Faster frame rates are better suited for more dynamic samples like live biological samples. There is also less eye fatigue produced from higher frame rate cameras.
In some application, simultaneous observation on a PC and on the HDMI screen is important.

The wide field plan 10X eyepieces have a wide and bright 22mm field of view, making it easy for target searching. They have a high eye-point and rubber eye caps which are effective at relieving eye fatigue. Various graticule options are available.

The standard configuration includes long working distance plan achromatic objectives (4X/10X/40X) and a 20X phase contrast objective. A complete range of Plan Achromat and Plan Achromat Phase Contrast objectives are available.

360° rotating viewing head with 50mm-75mm adjustable inter-pupillary distance. Eye-point can be raised 34mm by rotating the tube at 65mm IPD.

The ICX41 comes with glass and metal stage inserts, and a 35mm petrie dish holder. Extension plates, slide holders, Teraseki plate holders are also available.

Energy conservation and protecting the environment are important to us. The ICX41 includes an ECO system that uses an IR motion detector to automatically turn the illumination power on or off when the operator is away.

Our especially designed phase contrast plates work with our range of Phase Contrast (4X/10X/20X/40X) and Phase Contrast Fluorescence (20x/40x) objectives for excellent image quality.
